Welcome to Liberty Elementary School!

Liberty Elementary School

We Did It Again!!

The staff and I welcome you to the new school year at Liberty Elementary. We hope it is another great year for all of us. Last year at this time, I shared with you information about our school’s success on the Maryland State Assessments (MSA) in the 2009-2010 school year. While the MSA is only one data point for our school, it is certainly a very important standard to meet. As most of you know, due to not meeting the states expectations for two straight years (2007-2009), Liberty Elementary School was placed on the states list of schools in need of improvement. In order to get off of that list, our school had to demonstrate that our instructional practices and supports for students that were put in place made a difference for our students for a period of at least two years. It is with great pride and pleasure that I announce that once again we passed MSA and we are now off of the states list. These gains were made due to the wonderful team effort that we have here. We are very proud of our students, staff and the collaborative work with parents, volunteers and PTA as well as our partnerships with the Libertytown Lions Club and Johnsville Ruritan Club. This organized effort, along with the strategic plan and programs that we’ve started, has proved successful. Some of the programs supporting student learning are: Soaring Eagles (ELO), Soar with Four, Math Co-Teaching and Math Whizz, along with a wide variety of reading interventions.

In addition to the above improvement, we have been successful in closing the gap between our school and the other schools in the county in regards to the percentage of students who scored in the advanced range on MSA. We are less than 1% behind the county average of students scoring advanced in reading. In math, we are less than 6% behind the county average of students scoring advanced. We strongly believe our efforts with more rigorous questions and work has supported this positive change.

Of course, this change could not have occurred without the efforts of all of us! We look forward to our continued work together as partners in your child’s learning.

Sincerely,

Gerald (Jerry) DeGrange
