Welcome to First Grade!

Homework

Homework is done Monday-Thursday, for no more than 15 minutes nightly (FCPS homework guidelines.) Assignments are glued in homework book.

  • Please sign nightly after completing all assignments. 
  • Practice words nightly.

Word Study

All lessons are direct, explicit and systematic. Phonics is one component of a complete Language Arts program. Phonics unlocks the door to reading, it provides the decoding skills to become a fluent reader.

All students will learn:

  • rhyming and syllables
  • blending (c/a/t= cat) and segmenting (i.e. cat= c/a/t) sounds in a one syllable word
  • identify the onset and rime of a one syllable word
  • (i.e. t- op = top)
  • short and long vowel patterns through manipulation of letters and word sorts
  • blends (i.e. bl, tr, sm)
  • digraphs (sh, wh, th, ch)
  • plurals, contractions, compound words, prefixes and suffixes will be developed

Readers’ Workshop

All reading activities will focus on before, during and after reading strategies. We will utilize both fiction and non-fiction text for increasing comprehension.

All students will:

  • read a minimum of 25 books independently
  • identify fiction and non-fiction texts by their story elements and /or features (maps, photographs, table of contents, etc…)
  • use their prior knowledge (schema) to enhance understanding
  • identify their purpose for reading
  • ask and answer questions based on the text
  • identify story elements and sequence events (fiction)
  • make relevant predictions
  • make connections while reading
  • infer meaning of text using pictures, text features and words
  • determine importance, summarize and synthesize events and/or information in a text

Writers’ Workshop

All children will:

  • write complete sentences using nouns, verbs and adjectives
  • express personal ideas through writing personal narratives
  • write non-fiction paragraphs
  • write an original fiction story
  • develop a persuasive poster and/or paragraph
  • brainstorm ideas, organize his/her writing and use conventions (capitals, spaces, punctuation, spelling)
  • use the writing process to guide writing experiences

Math

Units of study are:

  • Math facts to 10
  • Number sense to 100
  • Place value to 100
  • Time to the hour and half-hour
  • Money- coins to $1.00
  • Geometry
  • Fractions
  • Problem solving

Science

All children will use the scientific process to guide all experiments.

Units of study are:

  • Weather
  • Living Organisms
  • Solids and Liquids

Social Studies
