Homework
Homework is assigned Monday-Thursday, for no more than 15 minutes nightly (FCPS homework guidelines.) Assignments are listed in Agendas and Home Work folders are used for organization.
·                                 Please sign agendas nightly to verify you were aware of the assignments. 
·                                 Read nightly. (This can be library books, reading group readings or home choices.)


Word Study
All lessons are phonics based and assigned based on a spelling inventory taken early in the year. Children will have a spelling composition book to house their assignment sheets which tell each evening’s assignments. The words are usually part of the assignment sheet but may need to be copied from the word study text which is sometimes used as a resource.


Reading
All reading activities will focus on before, during and after reading strategies. We will utilize both fiction and non-fiction text for increasing comprehension.
All students will:
·                                 read a minimum of 40books independently
·                                 identify fiction and non-fiction texts by their story elements and /or features (maps, photographs, table of contents, etc…)
·                                 use their prior knowledge (schema) to enhance understanding
·                                 identify their purpose for reading
·                                 ask and answer questions based on the text
·                                 identify story elements and sequence events (fiction)
·                                 make relevant predictions
·                                 make connections while reading
·                                 infer meaning of text using pictures, text features and words
·                                 determine importance, summarize and synthesize events and/or information in a text


Writers’ Workshop
All children will:
·                                 express personal ideas through writing personal narratives
·                                 write non-fiction paragraphs
·                                 write an original fiction story
·                                 write a persuasive paragraph
·                                 develop writing traits-ideas, organization, word choice, sentence fluency, voice and conventions(capitals, spaces, punctuation, spelling)
·                                 use the writing process to guide writing experiences


Math
Units of study are:
·                                 Counting, Coins and Combinations (addition, subtraction and number system 1)
·                                 Shapes, Blocks and Symmetry (2-D and 3-D Geometry)
·                                 Stickers, Number Strings and Story Problems (addition, subtraction and number system 2)
·                                 Pockets, Teeth and Favorite Things (Data Analysis)
·                                 How Many Floors? How Many Rooms? (patterns, functions and change)
·                                 How Many Tens? How Many Ones? (addition, subtraction and number system 3)
·                                 Parts of Whole, Parts of a Group (fractions)
·                                 Partners, Teams and Paper Clips (addition, subtraction and number system 4)
·                                 Measuring Length and Time (measurement)


Science
All children will use the scientific process to guide all experiments.
