Homework:
Homework is done Monday-Thursday, for no more than 15 minutes nightly (FCPS homework guidelines.) The week’s homework will be glues in your child’s Homework Book a week at a time.  Every Thursday your child will also be bringing home their Poetry Book.  Thursday night’s homework will directly correlate with the Poem in their Poetry Book.

Reading Group Books:
All students will begin to bring home the books we are using in reading groups.  Please try to practice reading these books at home.  They must be returned each day, in order for your child to have them to use in their reading group.

Writers’ Workshop:
Every Kindergarten class has writer’s workshop 3-4 times each week.  At the beginning of the year, this is the time that students use to draw a picture to tell a story.  Students will gradually start to add labels to their pictures, begin to explore writing a sentence, encouraged to use their word knowledge and word wall in their writing pieces, etc.  The students will be pushed to reach their potential at each level they are currently writing on.
**When your child is writing at home, they are to say the word slowly and write down the sounds that they hear in the word.  This is called phonetic spelling.  Please do not worry when words are spelled incorrectly.  We have not learned all of the phonics rules, vowel sounds, or other necessary language arts pieces that will play into their writing.  Do not correct their spelling.  Your child is taking the necessary developmental steps in learning to write.**

General Kindergarten Rules/Policies:
-       Your child is not allowed to bring in their toys from home.
-       If your child gets thirsty, we will allow them to visit the water fountain.  Other than providing a drink in a packed lunch, please do not send in sports bottles with juice, water, or other liquids (unless you have spoken to your child’s teacher.)
-       If your child has been absent, you must send in a note in order for the absence to be excused.
-       We will be following the school rules of:
o       Be Respectful
o       Be Responsible
o       Be Safe
o       Be Ready to Learn

Your child’s behavior calendar will be marked to indicate if they were on the traffic light for poor behavior.  The colors indicate the following:

White:  Followed all school rules.  The child was not on the traffic light today.
Green:  Did not follow a school rule today.  Was given a warning and put on green.

Yellow:  Did not follow school rules 2 times today.  They were given a warning after breaking the first rule, and then given a time out after breaking a rule again.

Red:  Did not follow school rules 3 times today.  They were given a warning after breaking the first rule, given a time out after breaking a rule again, then broke a rule a third time.  After this time, they will not have centers and must spend that time helping the teacher write a letter home to their parent(s).
